Greatsword and Great Axe are really best suited for Strength builds in my opinion. Claymore has a thrusting R2, bastard sword has a sweeping R2. Since your R1 attacks already sweep, having the thrust R2 gives it a lot more versatility. Yep Claymore might be the most versatile weapon in the game.
